Life and Society
Life in the lands of Kanthan is strict. Rules on where one can go, what one can wear, and when things may be done are all handed down from the king. Edicts of Trade, Edicts of Sumptry, and Edicts of the Season regulate much of the day to day life of the people of Kanthan. The king is highly influenced by the Church of Man Redeemed, namely Primate DioShane. Where the Edicts do not set the law, the Church does.

Most citizens live the life of underclass peasants, working from dawn to dusk and looking forward to the few national and religious holidays. Family life and the Church of Man Redeemed are the main foci outside of work. Little time is spent on frivolity.

Being nearer the border with Nolice than most territories in Malisted, Kanthan finds itself with decent but not forgiving soil. The ground is broken in many places by rocky outcroppings. While forested, the trees rarely grow straight and prime lumber is hard to come by. As such, many homes and building make use a few solid beams and fill in the rest with short lathes and stucco. Hardy vegetables and grasses grow there, but not much else. The cleared grasslands are given over to herding of sheep and cattle. With the abundance of stone in the land, small quarries dot the country and some experienced stone cutters call Kanthan home. Much of the stone is exported and quite a few noble houses across Alduras have a bit of statuary cut from Kanthan marble.

The king and dukes retain a few knights and men at arms for both protection and for sending to the aid of the communities they lord over. The towns and hamlets have a designated sheriff or two depending on size who keeps an eye on the citizens and the nearby countryside. Due to the curfews and limitations on travel, there are relatively few problems near the towns. The local Deacons disparage travel as a needless distraction and castigate any found wandering alone as being foolishly inviting to the Revenant. There are a few judges throughout the land, but provisions have been made within the edicts that any ordained minster or the Church of Man Redeemed may sit in judgement of another person so long as at least four others stand in witness of the trial.

Non humans are seen as something between a known thief, a piece of refuse, and a demon. They are not trusted and just about any wrongdoing done while one is in town is invariably blamed on the outsider.

Guilds and Groups of Note
Church of Man Redeemed
Leadership: Primate Veccan DioShane
Clergy: Provosts in larger towns and deacons in smaller settlements
Worship: Odesta the Light, the one true god
Doctrine: It is the age of man. The lesser races (any non-human) have tricked man into believing they are equals. Magic has weakened man’s resolve and allowed those below their station to subjugate others. It is but a test that many have failed and succumbed to the hollow power. An honest day’s work and toil leaves a clean soul. The use of magics to lesson one’s burden taints the soul and leaves it open to the intrusion of the Revenant’s touch. Trust not the outsider, especially those of the vile sub-human races. The Dwarves and Elves live in their secluded tunnels and forests, secretly planning ways to keep man from achieving their true destiny. Odesta is the only true deity. All others are either false or but a tiny facet of the true god and therefore should not be worshiped in its individuality. The Revenant is the manifestation of the fall of man. Its power clouds judgement and corrupts with the false visions and thoughts of an easy life. The Revenant would let man be enslaved by other races. The Revenant would promote the use of magic to the detriment of all. In times long past, magic flowed freely and the world was shaken to its core. With faith and obeisance it will not happen again.

Be strong, be faithful. Shun the touch of the sub human. Dally not in the false light of magic. Obey the Church of Man Redeemed in all things or be cursed to a life of moral corruption and self brought ruin.

Rumors

  • The Primate is the real law of the land. Even the king fears to cross the Church of Man Redeemed.
  • Agents of Nolice have infiltrated the noble houses and the Church and are spreading the disdain of magic and non humans for their own agenda.
  • Monstrous creatures are common in the twisted woods. With the peoples of the land bound close to their homes and free exploration frowned upon, the monsters live much nearer settlements than in other areas of the world.
  • A few dwarves that came to inspect one of the stone quarries disappeared. This is not the first time that non-humans have gone missing in Kanthan lands.
