Location: Rendar
Leadership: The Pillar of Wardens – Agmund Brokenblade
Size: Large ( 40-100 strong )
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Information:
The old warden proverb “Wardens aren’t made they are born” is the core of warden life. Wardens are men
and women who have given up their normal lives in service to their country. They are duty sworn to patrol
the vast wilds of Rendar and eliminate any threats they deem dangerous to the country. Wardens are tough
and solemn people held in high regard, and respect by the people they are sworn to protect. Most who
become wardens die with in the first month. Those that live and show their worth are given the symbol all
wardens wear, a small silver cloak clasp. Each one old and tarnished beaten and used, they are handed
down from warden to warden. The job is grueling it wears a man down and shows what he is truly made
of. The most any warden can hope to achieve is to have made a difference, to have helped those he calls
family, friend, and countrymen; before he dies in battle.
Wardens are split into chains, each chain is responsible for patrolling and keeping safe a territory of
Rendar. Each chain is led by a Sentinel Warden, who’s task it is to communicate with other chains and
keep his chain intact. Each Sentinel Warden also reports to the Council of Wardens. A group of 10 veteran
Wardens who work together to keep the chains on task. The Council reports to The Pillar of Wardens, who
resides by the Kings side in Kivan.
History:
The Wardens of Rendar came in to existence some 500 years ago, but their heritage and legacy stretches
back even farther. Before the wardens the land of Rendar was protected by the clan of the wolf. A roaming
clan who built no cities or towns. They moved freely throughout all of Rendar. They took it upon
themselves to keep the deadly beasts of the woods and wilds of the country at bay so that the other clans
could prosper and grow. Then came the great rise of the orc clans. They spilled out in massive numbers
threatening to wipe out the people of Rendar altogether. The wolf clan took the brunt of the beating as the
clans of Rendar joined forces to break the uprising. This bloody war decimated the wolf clan’s numbers to
the point of almost nonexistence. The King of Rendar Dagnar Stormbrow saw for the first time the terrors
of the wild tear at his war battered peoples. He knew without the wolf clan the people of his lands would
be ravaged constantly by the beasts. So he formed a group of warriors of like mind and purpose, and had
them trained by the elders of the wolf clan. These were the first of the wardens, the first links in the
mighty chain.
Warden Territories:
The Wardens have broken Rendar into fifteen Territories. Each territory has a chain or multiple chains
guarding it.Chains:
The Hearthguard – Territory # 1
Paragon Gyda the Savior of Kivan – While her husband, the king, was off leading an
army against a massing goblin and orc encursion, Gyda organized scouts and a militia from
what people were left in Kivan. Luckily she did for an advanced detachment of evil
humanoids had flanked her husbands army and were set on putting the capital of Rendar to
the torch. Her efforts at preparation and later during the repulsion of the assault saved
Kivan. This chain operates around Kivan and the surrounding countryside. It is typically the
first post for many Wardens, especially those with less field craft. As such their numbers
are usually higher than most chains but the overall experience level is less.
The Backbiters – Territory #2
Paragon Vladik Backbiter – Vladik once took the opportunity to jump from a small rise
on to the back of a rather large troll. Weilding two long daggers, he sank both to their hilts
in the back of vile humanoid. Unfortunately for him, neither of his daggers proved enough
to set the beast low. The rubbery and stinking flesh of the creature also made pulling the
blades out neigh impossible. As the rest of his Chain moved in to finish off the beast,
Vladik realized he had two options. He could hang on or let go and land within arms reach
of the troll without a single weapon in hand. Being the practical man that he was, he chose
to hold on and since he had no other weapons available to him, he chose to sink his teeth
into the creatures back for a little extra grip. It is said that he lost almost all sense of taste
from that day on.
The Orc Trippers – Territory #3
Paragon Stevros Orc-Tripper – Made many daring raids against orc war camps during the
Scar-Tar uprising. His lightning strikes and ability to disappear into the Rendarian
woodlands had the orcs tripping over themselves for weeks.
The Crimsonshields – Territory #4
Paragon Frodor Crimsonshield – After having his axe arm crushed by a giant’s massive
club, Frodor continued to fight, first breaking the giant’s knee with his shield’s edge forcingthe behemoth to the ground and then staving in giant’s skull. Frodor expired shortly
thereafter, but his name lives on as his Chain’s namesake. His bloodied shield now adorns
one of the mantles in the Lodge in Kivan.
The Swordbreakers – Territory # 5
Paragon Ingvar Swordbreaker – Valiant warden who died along with his chain defending
the small town of Nordin from four fearsome rampaging frost giants. Through his valiant
bravery and ultimate sacrifice the town was kept safe.
The Ironsides – Territory # 6
Paragon Gustavo Ironside – It is said that Gustavo Ironside stood his ground as a stone
giant tried to bat him off a hillside. Through sheer stubbornness or perhaps a bit of luck or
magic, the chunk of rock that the giant was using as a club broke apart when it hit Gustavo.
The giant was so shocked that it ran away in fear of the man who could not be crushed.
The Silver Serpents – Territory # 7
Paragon Signi Silvertongue – Warden who was as well known for his ability to talk his
way into or out of anything that his sword arm couldn’t handle. Operates near the mighty
river Kell along the border with Duran.
The Stoneskulls – Territory # 8
Paragon Kolgrim Stoneskull – A tougher and more tenacious warrior would be hard to
come by in person or in fable. While tracking a band of marauding orcs, Kolgrim stumbled
into an ambush. The orcs set off a rock-slide on their pursuers, burying most of them. It
took Kolgrim two whole days to dig himself out with little more than his dented helmet. He
spent the next day digging out what few survivors he could find. In the days that followed
he continued his pursuit and ended the orc threat in that area for a time.
The Anvil Tossers – Territory # 9
Paragon Chedwin Anvil-Tosser – Getting holed up in an old keep by a couple of giants
and running low on arrows, Chedwin had to improvise. Luring the creatures close to the
wall a number of stones were dropped from the parapets to subdue the creatures. The final
one was laid low when Chedwin, a hulking brute himself, carried a large anvil up to the top
of the keep by himself and dropped it down on the skull of the last giant.
The Nighteyes – Territory # 10
Paragon Telinathii Nighteyes – One of only Qwaunri elves to ever bear the badge of the
Wardens. He sacrificed much by leaving his people to fight for another. His teachings and
training are still used today. Many of the Wardens he personally trained went on to make
names for themselves.
The Ice Hammers – Territory # 11
Paragon Alfgeir Icehammer – Led a coalition of Wardens and a couple ships of the
Rendarian navy on a successful assault into the giant infested Ice Flows. Successful
meaning a few of them actually lived to return home and tell of it. Operates along the
northern coast.
The Seawards – Territory # 12
Paragon Dagfinn Seaward – Dagfinn Seaward was a man at home both on the sea and in
the wilds of Rendar. When a clan of Kuo-Toa set their sights on the shores of Rendar,
Dagfinn waded out into the icy waters to fight the creatures just so that they would not beable to set foot on his beloved Rendar. This chain’s territory includes Vanguard, the
northeastern coast and the surrounding lands. Like their paragon, they know their way
around both Rendar and the open sea.
The Wavestrider – Territory # 13
Paragon Ulla Wavestrider – A competent captain in her own right, Ulla led her Chain in
scouting both the land and sea. Many a beastly sea creature fell to the their deadly harpoons.
Operate near Traverse Bay area.
The Hiltdrivers – Territory # 14
Paragon Bondarlo Hiltdriver – In a battle with a frostwyrm, Bondarlo was partially caught
in the beast’s maw. He was able to drive his sword up to the hilt through the monster’s eye,
but it kept chewing on him. He eventually had to drive it even deeper to the wyrm down,
gouging his arm up to the elbow into the socket of the giant lizard.
The Brokenblades – Territory #15
Paragon Agmund Brokenblade – Coming soon…
